Organizing for National Voter Registration Day 2025 Begins

Civic Holiday Begins Partner Recruitment Ahead of 2025’s 100,000+ Elections

Boston, MA – April 16, 2025 – On the heels of last year’s record-breaking celebration, the leadership team behind National Voter Registration Day – which will be held on September 16 this year – have announced the official start of the holiday’s organizing with their 2025 Community Partner Recruitment Drive. After their work in 2024 to help over 820,000 Americans ensure their readiness to take part in the last presidential election, the National Voter Registration Day team is shifting gears to focus on getting every eligible American registered and #VoteReady for the thousands of state and local races happening up and down the ballot in 2025.

Citing over 100,000 races at state and municipal levels across 45 states in 2025, National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director Chyann Sapp says the holiday plans to spend the year dispelling the myth of the “off-year”.

“2025 is not just an election year, it’s an elections year with a big emphasis on the ‘s’,” said Sapp. “Whether it’s Wisconsin’s recent high profile state Supreme Court race, New York City’s mayoral primaries in the summer, statewide elections in Virginia and New Jersey, or the thousands of local races across the country, 2025 will be a busy year for democracy and National Voter Registration Day. And we’ll be celebrating the only way we know how: getting the nation registered and #VoteReady.”

Wasting no time in building the nonpartisan coalition that makes the holiday possible, National Voter Registration Day 2025 has already assembled a team of 78 Premier Partners. Boasting names like iHeartMedia, Headcount, Paramount, Rock the Vote, Democracy Works, Entravision, Lyft, and National Urban League, the holiday’s Premier Partners represent a broad cross section of the best that America has to offer. While recruitment is still underway, organizers expect over 120 major national Premier Partners and nearly 4,000 Community Partners to take part in the holiday this year.

With a 13 year history of helping to get over 6 million Americans registered to vote, Sapp says the holiday’s grassroots nature is perfect for a moment when many Americans are looking for ways they can make an impact at a more localized level.

“In so many ways, 2025 gives us an opportunity to get back to the basics of democracy,” said Sapp. “While so much national media attention is focused on the day-to-day happenings in Washington, promoting voter engagement at the local level enables us to empower Americans with a sense of ownership and agency of civic life in the communities they call home.”The holiday’s organizers encourage nonprofits, colleges and universities, election offices, local businesses, and other community groups to sign up as National Voter Registration Day Community Partners and learn how they can contribute their talents to this annual celebration of democracy.

About National Voter Registration Day: The holiday is made possible by the collaborative effort of partners across a diverse array of industries and fields, including 2025 Premier Sponsors The Carnegie Corporation of New York, Google, Microsoft, and Room & Board . Letter to our 2024 Partners

Dear Partners and supporters of National Voter Registration Day,

We are thrilled to share the outstanding impact and results we made together on this year’s National Voter Registration Day!

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of our partners, volunteers, and supporters, two million Americans across the nation registered, updated their registration, or checked/verified their registration status as part of the holiday. This represents 1 out of every 120 eligible voters nationwide. Of this number, 820,000 voters registered to vote or updated their voter registration status as part of the day, and 310,000 of the registrations were from youth voters (18-24 year olds), many of whom will be voting for the first time in this election. Over a quarter (230,000) of the new and updated registrations were collected by community partners at events across the nation, with each event collecting 50 registrations on average. This now brings the holiday’s lifetime registration total to over six million voters, underscoring the importance of the annual celebration in keeping the democratic process accessible and inclusive.

This success would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of our network of funders, which includes Aflac, American Property Owners Alliance, CAA, Carnegie Corporation of NY, Civic Alliance, Civic Responsibility Project, Google, I am a Voter, Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, National Association of Realtors, Paramount, Room & Board, Target, and the Wallace Coulter Foundation. We were honored to collaborate with 152 Premier Partners and 5,600 Community Partners nationwide. Both of those represent new, all-time records for the holiday! And a special thanks to our Trusted Election Officials, including the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (Election Center) for their endorsements of the holiday. As partners and supporters, your commitment brought this civic holiday to life in every corner of our nation, from community centers to college campuses and local businesses. Thank you for being a driving force behind this effort!

Nonprofit VOTE is honored to serve as the Managing Partner of National Voter Registration Day, but the success of the holiday belongs to the many Partners – including you – working in concert as a broad collaborative. Together, we are building a more engaged and representative democracy. Let’s continue this momentum as we approach GOTV season and gear up for next year’s National Voter Registration Day, which will be held on September 16, 2025

With deep gratitude,

National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director, Chyann Sapp and the rest of the National Voter Registration Day team

Millions of Voter Contacts Help 820,000 Americans Register as Part of National Voter Registration Day
Work Continues as State Deadlines Rapidly Approach

Boston, MA – September 30, 2024 – This year’s National Voter Registration Day has achieved unprecedented success, shattering partnership records and helping 820,000 American voters register or update their voter registration—approximately 1 out of every 280 eligible voters in the country. It is estimated that about 310,000 of these new or updated registrations came from 18-24-year-olds, many voting for the first time in 2024. This remarkable achievement underscores the growing importance of this civic holiday in strengthening our democracy.

“The success of this year’s National Voter Registration Day, celebrated on September 17th, is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day. “With 820,000 Americans taking action to register or update their voter information, we’re witnessing a powerful surge in civic engagement that helps to strengthen our democracy.” When including registration verifications, that is people who use the various online tools to confirm their registration is up to date, the number grows to roughly 2 million Americans—or 1 in 120 eligible voters—who either registered, updated, or verified their registration.

This success was made possible by a record-breaking civic coalition of 152 Premier Partners (45 more than ever before) and 5,600 Community Partners (1,000 more than ever before) who participated in the event. In all, 40,000 volunteers and staff members worked tirelessly across the nation—at colleges, high schools, libraries, nonprofits, transit hubs, bagel shops, and more—to help citizens register to vote. Meanwhile, the many digital and media partners helped elevate the holiday and registration opportunities online. The collective impact helped facilitate millions of conversations and interactions about the importance of voting.

Sapp adds, “This incredible success is a testament to the hard work of our partners, volunteers, and the American people’s commitment to the democratic process. As we approach critical elections, it’s clear that citizens are more engaged than ever in shaping the future of their communities and country.”

Beyond the holiday itself, National Voter Registration Day events across the nation help to jump-start voter registration drives that will continue up to the various state registration deadlines. Americans are encouraged to visit Vote.gov to register to vote, update their registration, or just verify the information on file is correct.

National Voter Registration Day is Proud to Announce Partnership with ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN)

Washington, DC – National Voter Registration Day is proud to count the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) among the 150 major national partners backing this year’s civic holiday. ALL IN is a national nonpartisan initiative of the nonprofit Civic Nation and is dedicated to improving civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation among college students across the country. ALL IN is excited to be joining National Voter Registration Day this year to help mobilize this mission to an extensive network of college and university campuses.

“With more than 40 million Gen Zers preparing to vote in this upcoming election, engaging and educating young voters is crucial for the health of our democracy,” said Jen Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of ALL IN. “We’ve identified several measures that will impact ballot access so that young voter turnout can be the highest it has been.”

Through this collaboration, ALL IN helps mobilize young college students through email outreach, social media campaigns, and on-campus registration events. Given their expansive reach, ALL IN has been able to impact more than 1,060 campuses including community colleges, minority-serving institutions, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

“ALL IN’s commitment to empowering students on over 1,060 campuses nationwide is transforming the landscape of civic engagement for young Americans from coast to coast,” said National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director Chyann Sapp. “By fostering a culture of active participation and civic education for the newest generation of voters, they are building the foundation for a stronger democracy of the future. Their focus on ensuring every student, regardless of background, has the tools and opportunities to register and vote is a shining example of how we can come together to ensure every voice is heard.”

The National Voter Registration Day network continues to grow nationally and locally. In addition to the record 15,048 major national organizations and businesses signed on this year, 4,500 local partners – including nonprofits, libraries, colleges, and others across the nation – will be promoting voter registration in their own communities to help ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the upcoming election. “As we gear up for the 2024 National Voter Registration Day to be held on September 17, we are coordinating with other organizations and preparing robust follow-up actions, including phone banking, text messages, email, and mailers to keep newly registered voters engaged and informed about upcoming elections,” adds Sapp.

How Lyft is Driving Voter Registration

From 2020 to 2022, the number of registered voters in America dropped by over 7 million people. That’s partially because every year, millions of Americans move, change their name, turn 18, or become citizens — life events that require registering or re-registering to vote – without even realizing it.

Beyond the basics of civics, voting impacts everyone from the members of our community to the communities we serve. At Lyft, we believe every eligible American should exercise their fundamental rights and that transportation should never be a barrier to access. We aim to be a force of good in our community and want to empower everyone who’s eligible to register to vote. We are doing that by sending important reminders about voter registration right in the Lyft app.

We’re not standing alone in the business community. This year, more than 150 other NVRD partners organizations – from social media companies to nonprofit organizations to large corporations – have committed to amplifying National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) in our communities. The origin of NVRD dates back to 2012, when democracy-focused organizations and election officials first advocated for a new national holiday dedicated to voter registration. Out of this effort, NVRD was born, and now unites volunteers, community partners, and businesses across the nation to make voter registration opportunities more visible. Through targeted campaigns and grassroots outreach, these efforts have registered more than 5 million voters as of the last election cycle.

This success is due in large part to the support of partner organizations like Lyft. Drivers on the Lyft platform gave over 393 million rides in the first half of the year alone. The scale of this reach comes with a responsibility to our users and our democracy, and it is a responsibility we take seriously.

Over the years, Lyft has helped more than 3 million riders find a rideshare driver to go to a polling location, drop off their ballot in a dropbox, or go to a voter registration drive or related event. Lyft, as part of its NVRD partnership, will add a voter registration link in the in-ride feed for riders and promote National Voter Registration Day to their thousands of employees.  The 2024 Lyft Up Voting Access Program will help provide access to the polls by sharing critical voting access information and providing free and discounted rides to the polls.

Elections ensure that our shared values are prioritized, and that the public’s voice is heard on important issues at the local, state, and national levels. As we approach National Voter Registration Day on September 17, we encourage every eligible American to verify their voter registration status and familiarize themselves with the issues on the November ballot so that they are fully prepared to cast their vote on election day. Voting is a powerful tool for change, so join in, register, and make sure you’re ready to make an impact this November.

National Voter Registration Day 2024 Shattering Records

From Election Officials to Media Companies, Nonprofits, and Celebrity Voices, Efforts to Register Voters Underway Across the Nation

Today, September 17, Americans unite in a powerful celebration of democracy as part of National Voter Registration Day 2024 – the nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to ensuring that every eligible American has the opportunity to register to vote ahead of the fast-approaching elections. The number of major national partners supporting the holiday has grown dramatically, by 42%, since the last presidential election. The number of local community partners grew by over 20%, setting another record. The holiday is a unique collaboration between election officials, media companies, celebrity voices, nonprofits, and community partners across the nation.

“We’re glad to have every major election official association backing the holiday to instill confidence in the voting process and help more Americans get registered for this record-breaking year,” states Sec. of State Steve Simon of Minnesota, who co-chairs the holiday’s Steering Committee with Sec. Michael Adams of Kentucky.  “We applaud NASS, NASED, Election Center, and the EAC for being a driving force behind the holiday. Their leadership helps cement the holiday as a time for all Americans, regardless of party, to come together and celebrate our democracy.” The holiday also received a White House proclamation Monday and a bi-partisan resolution from the U.S. Senate in July.

Media partners are helping to amplify the holiday as well. Google kicked off the day with a special Google Doodle that links to the various state registration sites. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and others are promoting voter registration links in their apps. Microsoft is promoting the holiday online and on its huge, cube-shaped Time Square display.  iHeartMedia, Estrella MediaCo, Spotify, and numerous station partners of the National Association of Broadcasters are running PSAs on radio and television to amplify the holiday’s message in difficult to reach communities. “We’re glad to do our part to help more Americans register to vote as part of this nonpartisan celebration of our democracy,” states Jacqueline Hernandez, interim CEO of MediaCo.

Meanwhile, a wide array of actors, musicians, sports figures, influencers, and other public figures are leveraging their fan bases and social media reach to further amplify the holiday and register voters. Along with shout-outs from Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Robert Reich, Stephen Colbert, Ariana Grande, Kerry Washington, Jon Dretto, Howard Stern, DJ Questlove, Steph Curry, Rhiannon Giddens, and the Broadway company of Hamilton are encouraging their fans and followers to register to vote. Thanks to MTV, HeadCount, WWAV, and other partners for helping to leverage some of these voices. Anika Noni Rose, Michael Ealy, Estelle, and others are part of an ICON MANN video released today. Leagues like the NFL, US Soccer, and NBA are also promoting the holiday. Many more public figures are expected to join the chorus as the day goes on.

“We are elated to have such record-breaking participation this year,” states National Voter Registration Day’s Campaign Director, Chyann Sapp. “With 152 Premier Partners, from media companies to election official organizations and national nonprofits, we’ve seen more participation than ever. We’re also breaking records with over 5,500 Community Partners, including local nonprofits, LWV chapters, libraries, colleges, and others, that are helping register voters in their own communities.” Previous records set in 2020 were 107 and 4,589 respectively.

National Voter Registration Day brings needed attention to the voter registration process ahead of state registration deadlines. State deadlines vary from 30 days to the Election Day in states with Same-Day Registration. However, event organizers encourage voters to not wait. Registering early is the best way to ensure you are ready for elections in November. Eligible voters can go to Vote.gov to register or update their registration.

5 Week Countdown to National Voter Registration Day Has Begun!

Over 140 National Organizations, Businesses, and Election Official Associations Join Forces to Promote Voter Registration Ahead of September 17 Celebration

Washington, DC — August 13, 2024 — Organizing is underway for the 2024 National Voter Registration Day to be held on September 17. With just five weeks to go, the holiday has recruited a record number of major national partners. The 140+ strong coalition of businesses, national nonprofits, election official associations, and other organizations are using their platforms and resources to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities across the country. In addition to the national partners, Nonprofit VOTE, which manages the collaborative holiday, expects over 4,500 community partners to host local events across the nation.

Organizing for this year’s National Voter Registration Day got a boost last month when Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Deb Fischer (R-NE) pushed a bi-partisan resolution (SR766) through the US Senate proclaiming September 17, 2024 to be National Voter Registration Day. The Senate resolution reinforces the holiday’s long-standing reputation as a nonpartisan event that brings all Americans together in celebration of our democracy.

In addition to longstanding supporters such as Google, the League of Women Voters, Paramount Network, and the National Basketball Association, the 2024 network includes notable newcomers like PepsiCo and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, highlighting the expanding reach and impact of this national movement that first kicked off in 2012. They are among the 142 Premier Partners that signed on to support the 2024 event.

“We are incredibly excited to see such a diverse and influential group of major national partners, our Premier Partners, come together for National Voter Registration Day 2024,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day. “Their commitment to celebrating our democracy by promoting voter registration opportunities on the holiday is vital in ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate.”

In addition to the national partners, Sapp said the holiday continues its nationwide recruitment of thousands of local partners. “These local food pantries, public libraries, universities and campus-based organizations, and other community partners do the real work of meeting voters face-to-face. It’s their ability to turn clipboards and conversations into newly registered voters that makes this holiday a uniquely effective force for getting America registered to vote in time for their next trip to the ballot box.”

In the lead-up to September 17, National Voter Registration Day will work closely with both national and local partners to distribute educational materials, coordinate events, and share key messages about the importance of voter registration. Recruitment for partners remains ongoing and interested groups are encouraged to sign up at NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org.

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan holiday held each September to raise awareness of voter registration opportunities. It is endorsed by every major election official association. Key sponsors for 2024 include Aflac, American Property Owners Alliance, CAA, Carnegie Corporation of NY, Civic Responsibility Project, Google, Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, Paramount, National Association of Realtors, Room & Board, Target, and the Wallace Coulter Foundation.
