National Voter Registration Day 2025 Brings Americans Together in Celebration of Democracy, Registering 300,000 Voters

With more than 100,000 elections on ballots across the country in 2025, over 3,200 local organizations joined forces to help Americans register to vote or update their registration, showing the power of a nonpartisan civic coalition at a time of deep divisions.

BOSTON, MA – On September 16, communities across the country once again came together for National Voter Registration Day, transforming schools, libraries, food banks, college quads, and city streets into nonpartisan celebrations of democracy. Thousands of partners created opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors take their first step into civic participation.

The result was powerful: An estimated 300,000 new and updated voter registrations, surpassing this year’s goal and demonstrating that even in challenging times, civic participation can be a joyful, unifying act. Of the total registrations, 80,000 were collected directly by partners in the field, a reminder that face-to-face conversations and local leadership remain the beating heart of democracy. Many of the remainder were engaged through online or hybrid efforts.

This year’s coalition included:

  • 118 premier partners, bringing national reach and trusted voices to the effort, including: the League of Women Voters, American Library Association, Poder Latinx, YWCA, NAMI, National Disability Rights Network, EveryLibrary, Employees Vote, Comedy Central, BET, eBay, Lyft, Uber, and others who are actively leading the way in mobilizing trusted local institutions to reach both new voters and those who may need to update their registration;
  • More than 3,200 community partners, including 18,000 volunteers and staff, spanning every region and type of community, from rural towns to major cities, youth-led groups to faith communities, food banks to cultural festivals, proving that democracy can thrive anywhere people gather;
  • And sponsors committed to stepping up for their communities, including the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Google, Microsoft, NBA, Levi Strauss & Company, Civic Alliance, Paramount, CAA, I am a Voter, and Room & Board;

Partner surveys show that the overwhelming majority of partners reported positive and energizing experiences, reflecting both the enthusiasm of their communities and the unifying power of nonpartisan voter registration work. These results build on a long tradition: since its founding in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has helped more than 6.3 million Americans register to vote, with this year’s total continuing the strong growth seen in recent cycles.

“Once again, this year’s results show the power of people coming together to say that there are no off years in creating a democracy that is representative of our communities,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director of National Voter Registration Day. “In a moment when division can feel overwhelming, our partners proved that unity and joy are possible when we commit to strengthening democracy together.”

With more than 100,000 open seats on ballots this year from school boards and city councils to state legislatures and local ballot measures, the registrations collected on September 16 will shape decisions that affect communities every day. Already, partners are using the momentum from this year’s celebration to continue voter registration drives up to their respective state registration deadlines and prepare for get-out-the-vote efforts in the weeks ahead.

Some notable highlights include:

  • Registration totals coming out of California, where a major redistricting measure is on the November ballot, rival the number of registrations collected in 2024.
  • With a significant mayoral race grabbing people’s attention along with other races around the state, New York voter registration numbers almost doubled the registration numbers from last year’s National Voter Registration Day.
  • Registration rates out of Illinois were also very strong  with municipal elections taking place across the state this November.

To hear directly from the voices of partners who brought this effort to life, watch the National Voter Registration Day 2025 Virtual Press Conference featuring Democracy North Carolina registering voters at a homeless shelter, students at Brandeis Univ. outside Boston, leaders from HeadCount organizing youth-led engagements in New York, Poder Latinx across Southern California, Detroit Change Initiative, and more.

National Voter Registration Day will be held next on September 15, 2026. To learn more about the holiday, visit the official holiday website

National Voter Registration Day is held each year in September, on a Tuesday prior to the various state registration deadlines. Deadlines can vary from as much as 30 days ahead of the election, early October for the November 5 election, to Election Day itself for states with Same Day Registration. Voters can visit vote.gov to begin the registration process in their respective states.

Nation Unites for National Voter Registration Day as 100,000 Open Seats for Election Take Shape in 2025

Nearly 3,500 partners from schools, libraries, concerts, and block parties will rally communities nationwide on September 16 to get Americans registered and ready to vote.

Boston, MA: On September 16, 2025, communities nationwide will come together for the country’s largest single-day celebration of democracy: National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). With more than 100,000 elections taking place this year — more than in 2024 — the stakes for ensuring every eligible American is registered and able to participate in shaping their neighborhood are higher than ever.

From schools and libraries to concerts and block parties, nearly 3,500 community partners, powered by the support of premier and foundational partners, will host events to help Americans get registered and ready to vote.

Across the country, this national coalition is digging in, standing shoulder to shoulder with local leaders, and stepping up to meet the moment.

HeadCount is carrying the celebratory spirit into the cultural space, hosting a flagship block party in New York City’s Washington Square Park while also supporting more than 36 youth-led registration drives at campuses and community gathering places nationwide.

“National Voter Registration Day is a celebration of our democracy and a reminder that every election matters, including the ones happening in our own backyards,” said Lucille Wenegieme, Executive Director of HeadCount. “This civic holiday reminds us that participation can be a unifying force. At HeadCount, we see the power of music and culture to bring people together. Today we are channeling that energy into making sure everyone has the chance to use their voice and be part of shaping the future.”

Nonprofit VOTE will coordinate with thousands of nonprofits, libraries, and community organizations nationwide, ensuring local leaders have the tools they need to engage their communities.

“National Voter Registration Day is about the collective power of the community,” said Brian Miller, Executive Director of Nonprofit VOTE. “Year after year, local leaders step up to make sure their neighbors, friends, and families are ready to vote. This year is no different. With thousands of partners nationwide, we are proving once again that there are no off years when it comes to strengthening our democracy.”

When We All Vote is mobilizing its Youth Advisory Fellows and grassroots partners for 30 registration events during the National Voter Registration Week of Action.

“Less than 50 days from Election Day, we cannot ignore how heavy things feel in the world, and we cannot forget the power we have,” said Beth Lynk, Executive Director of When We All Vote. “This National Voter Registration Day, we will bring hope and joy into the fight by celebrating young, Black, and Brown voters using their power at the ballot box. With more elections on the ballot this year than there were in 2024, each election is an opportunity to build a better future for all of us, and that starts with making sure our communities are registered to vote.”

Rock the Vote will activate its national network of young people through digital outreach and local partnerships, making sure the next generation of voters can overcome barriers to the ballot box.

“Registering to vote is the first step in making sure our voices are heard and that we elect leaders who reflect our values,” said Carolyn DeWitt, President and Executive Director of Rock the Vote. “New voters face unique and disproportionate barriers, which means our democracy often fails to represent young people, generation after generation. That is why Rock the Vote is proud to be a founder and partner of National Voter Registration Day, helping young voters get ready to cast their ballots in local elections across the country in 2025.”

Vote.org will continue its mission to remove barriers between voters and the ballot box, building on the more than 2.2 million voters it helped register in 2024.

“Vote.org is proud to be a founding member of National Voter Registration Day,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org. “This civic holiday celebrates democracy as a collaboration. As the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan voter registration platform, we know every voice matters because democracy works best when everyone participates. Your registration today is your power tomorrow.”

From Libraries to the NBA, Thousands of Partners Unite to Register Voters for National Voter Registration Day

Close to 3,500 organizations join forces to reach millions of voters at a moment when participation matters more than ever

Boston, MA — National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), the country’s largest civic holiday dedicated to getting every eligible American registered to vote, today announced thanks and recognition for the premier partners and sponsors who make the day possible.

For this year’s holiday, on September 16, approximately 3,500 community partners will host nonpartisan voter registration drives and outreach events across the nation. These events will take place in schools, on campuses, at libraries, in houses of worship, on shop floors, and online; all designed to meet voters where they are. The scale of this effort underscores the nonpartisan belief shared across civil society that every eligible American deserves an equal opportunity to have their voice heard in a fully participatory democracy.

Premier partners like the League of Women Voters, American Library Association, Poder Latinx, YWCA, NAMI, National Disability Rights Network, EveryLibrary, Employees Vote, Comedy Central, BET, eBay, Google, Lyft, Uber, and others are leading the way in mobilizing trusted local institutions to reach both new voters and those who may need to update their registration. Sponsors including the NBA, Meta, Levi Strauss & Co, and more are providing the financial support that makes this work possible at a national scale. For the full list of partners and sponsors, please see here.

“At a time when our democracy is being tested and too many Americans are left behind, it is incredible to see such a diverse range of organizations step up,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director of National Voter Registration Day. “These partners are not only reminding us that there are no off years, they are proving that civic participation is something all of us can stand behind.”

“At Poder Latinx, we’re proud to stand with National Voter Registration Day to ensure that every eligible voter—from first-timers to longtime community members—has the tools, guidance, and confidence to participate.  Civic engagement isn’t just a right; it’s a way to strengthen our neighborhoods, amplify our stories, and shape policies that reflect our families’ needs. Every voice in our community deserves to be heard, and every vote matters, and when we show up to vote, it goes beyond casting a ballot: we’re building a future where Latino voices lead, influence, and create lasting change,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.

This year’s efforts come at a pivotal moment. More than 40 million Americans have moved in the past year, and over 4 million have turned 18 or become naturalized citizens. Each of them needs to register or update their registration in order to cast a ballot. By convening thousands of partners from every corner of society, National Voter Registration Day ensures that no community is left out.

National Voter Registration Day will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. To learn more, sign up as a community partner, or find a registration event near you, visit here.

Communities Prepare for National Voter Registration Day as Key States See Expanding Networks of Partners

With almost 3,500 organizations expected to take part, National Voter Registration Day continues to mobilize trusted community institutions in a key year for local elections

Boston, MA: The leadership team at National Voter Registration Day announced they are well on track for another year of strong participation, with almost 3,500 community partners expected to host events on September 16. Organizations from New York to California, and from Michigan to Georgia are preparing to help their neighbors register, update their information, and ensure their voices are heard in the more than 100,000 local elections taking place this year.

New York, Texas, and California are each expected to have more than 250 partners organizing local events, with hundreds more across North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia, and Michigan. The expansion highlights the grassroots momentum behind the holiday, as trusted local institutions like public libraries, food pantries, community colleges, and neighborhood associations take the lead in bringing voter registration directly to the communities they serve.

“Right now, over 40 million Americans either moved or turned 18 in the last year, and others have naturalized or changed their names requiring a voter registration update,” said Brian Miller, Executive Director of Nonprofit VOTE, the managing partner of National Voter Registration Day. “Those are the voters who can decide the school board budgets, the housing policy, the local races that shape our daily lives. We are proud to help those individuals make their voices heard in decisions affecting their own communities.”

“The League of Women Voters is excited to host hundreds of events in communities across the country for National Voter Registration Day,” said Jeanette Senecal, Chief of Civic Learning and Impact at the League of Women Voters. “Voters in more than 35 states still have the chance to shape the future of their communities in meaningful ways this year. The League is proud to partner with NVRD to make sure every eligible voter knows that there is no such thing as an ‘off year’ when it comes to democracy.”

“Libraries are trusted community spaces where people come to learn, connect, and participate,” said Sam Helmick, President of the American Library Association. “That includes providing access to civic information that empowers neighbors to make their voices heard at the ballot box. The American Library Association is committed to working alongside NVRD and our partners to meet this moment and ensure that communities have the resources they need in this election year.”

Across the country, community groups will host registration drives at farmers markets, libraries, food pantries, local colleges, and small businesses. Together, they form a nonpartisan network working to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to register and participate in shaping the future of their communities.

Organizations in every state can still join the effort, gaining access to free resources, training, and visibility as part of the nationwide celebration. To learn more or to sign up, organizations can visit the official holiday website. Organizations that sign up by the end of Tuesday, September 2, will receive complimentary event organizing kits. For inquiries please contact Kelsea-Marie Pym, kelsea@nonprofitvote.org.

From New York to Texas: Thousands of Local Organizations Rally for Voter Registration Ahead of Critical Year for Local Elections

The coast-to-coast effort around National Voter Registration Day shows there’s no ‘off year’ when it comes to registering and empowering voters

Boston, MA: Today, the leadership team behind  National Voter Registration Day is proud to announce surpassing 1,776 community partners – A notable number on the eve of the nation’s 250th Anniversary – with more groups signing on every day. Across the country, almost 3,500 local organizations are expected to be organizing events on September 16 to help the people they serve claim not just services, but a say in the decisions that affect them. Public libraries, neighborhood food pantries, community colleges, and even local businesses will set up voter registration tables in their own communities on the holiday, in partnership with major national  partners and media companies supporting the holiday.

“Last year, our partners helped over 2 million Americans get registered, confirm their registration, or update their registration, and that momentum does not stop in so-called ‘off years.’,”  says Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day.  “There are over 100,000 local and state elections this year that will shape all facets of community life. We are building on our momentum with this in mind, with an even stronger coalition to reach people where they live, work, and gather.”

“For our community partners, making sure every eligible person can register is about more than civic duty. It is about protecting the resources that keep their communities going, because they know that participation shapes policy. Local elections impact everything from the kind of education our children receive to public safety, transportation, and public green spaces.”

From the largest cities to the smallest towns, the reach of this year’s effort is unmistakable. In New York, close to 250 local groups are expected to register new voters with events across the state, with Texas and California close behind. North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio are each expected to see about 150 local groups organizing events in their own communities, followed by New Jersey, Georgia, and Michigan. In every corner of these states, familiar local faces — librarians, food pantry volunteers, service providers, community colleges and universities — are making sure their neighbors can take part in decisions that shape everything from school boards to state budgets.

“For the people doing this work, voter registration isn’t an abstract cause, it’s part of their community service. It’s a reminder that democracy works best when built from the ground up. The nonpartisan spirit of the holiday goes back 13 years and has proven, time and time again, to uplift the importance of local elections and community voices by cutting through polarizing soundbites to get to the core fundamental belief that democracy functions best with full, and inclusive, participation,” Sapp stated.

With just a few weeks still to go before National Voter Registration Day, held on September 16 this year, new partners are signing on every day, expanding the reach of this grassroots network. Organizations in every state can still join the effort, gaining access to free resources, training, and visibility as part of the nationwide celebration. Nonpartisan and inclusive, the day is designed to reach every eligible voter, no matter their background, and connect them with the tools they need to participate. To learn more or to sign up, organizations can visit the official holiday website.

Organizing for National Voter Registration Day 2025 Begins

Civic Holiday Begins Partner Recruitment Ahead of 2025’s 100,000+ Elections

Boston, MA – April 16, 2025 – On the heels of last year’s record-breaking celebration, the leadership team behind National Voter Registration Day – which will be held on September 16 this year – have announced the official start of the holiday’s organizing with their 2025 Community Partner Recruitment Drive. After their work in 2024 to help over 820,000 Americans ensure their readiness to take part in the last presidential election, the National Voter Registration Day team is shifting gears to focus on getting every eligible American registered and #VoteReady for the thousands of state and local races happening up and down the ballot in 2025.

Citing over 100,000 races at state and municipal levels across 45 states in 2025, National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director Chyann Sapp says the holiday plans to spend the year dispelling the myth of the “off-year”.

“2025 is not just an election year, it’s an elections year with a big emphasis on the ‘s’,” said Sapp. “Whether it’s Wisconsin’s recent high profile state Supreme Court race, New York City’s mayoral primaries in the summer, statewide elections in Virginia and New Jersey, or the thousands of local races across the country, 2025 will be a busy year for democracy and National Voter Registration Day. And we’ll be celebrating the only way we know how: getting the nation registered and #VoteReady.”

Wasting no time in building the nonpartisan coalition that makes the holiday possible, National Voter Registration Day 2025 has already assembled a team of 78 Premier Partners. Boasting names like iHeartMedia, Headcount, Paramount, Rock the Vote, Democracy Works, Entravision, Lyft, and National Urban League, the holiday’s Premier Partners represent a broad cross section of the best that America has to offer. While recruitment is still underway, organizers expect over 120 major national Premier Partners and nearly 4,000 Community Partners to take part in the holiday this year.

With a 13 year history of helping to get over 6 million Americans registered to vote, Sapp says the holiday’s grassroots nature is perfect for a moment when many Americans are looking for ways they can make an impact at a more localized level.

“In so many ways, 2025 gives us an opportunity to get back to the basics of democracy,” said Sapp. “While so much national media attention is focused on the day-to-day happenings in Washington, promoting voter engagement at the local level enables us to empower Americans with a sense of ownership and agency of civic life in the communities they call home.”The holiday’s organizers encourage nonprofits, colleges and universities, election offices, local businesses, and other community groups to sign up as National Voter Registration Day Community Partners and learn how they can contribute their talents to this annual celebration of democracy.

Letter to our 2024 Partners

Dear Partners and supporters of National Voter Registration Day,

We are thrilled to share the outstanding impact and results we made together on this year’s National Voter Registration Day!

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of our partners, volunteers, and supporters, two million Americans across the nation registered, updated their registration, or checked/verified their registration status as part of the holiday. This represents 1 out of every 120 eligible voters nationwide. Of this number, 820,000 voters registered to vote or updated their voter registration status as part of the day, and 310,000 of the registrations were from youth voters (18-24 year olds), many of whom will be voting for the first time in this election. Over a quarter (230,000) of the new and updated registrations were collected by community partners at events across the nation, with each event collecting 50 registrations on average. This now brings the holiday’s lifetime registration total to over six million voters, underscoring the importance of the annual celebration in keeping the democratic process accessible and inclusive.

This success would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of our network of funders, which includes Aflac, American Property Owners Alliance, CAA, Carnegie Corporation of NY, Civic Alliance, Civic Responsibility Project, Google, I am a Voter, Levi Strauss & Co., Microsoft, National Association of Realtors, Paramount, Room & Board, Target, and the Wallace Coulter Foundation. We were honored to collaborate with 152 Premier Partners and 5,600 Community Partners nationwide. Both of those represent new, all-time records for the holiday! And a special thanks to our Trusted Election Officials, including the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (Election Center) for their endorsements of the holiday. As partners and supporters, your commitment brought this civic holiday to life in every corner of our nation, from community centers to college campuses and local businesses. Thank you for being a driving force behind this effort!

Nonprofit VOTE is honored to serve as the Managing Partner of National Voter Registration Day, but the success of the holiday belongs to the many Partners – including you – working in concert as a broad collaborative. Together, we are building a more engaged and representative democracy. Let’s continue this momentum as we approach GOTV season and gear up for next year’s National Voter Registration Day, which will be held on September 16, 2025

With deep gratitude,

National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director, Chyann Sapp and the rest of the National Voter Registration Day team

Millions of Voter Contacts Help 820,000 Americans Register as Part of National Voter Registration Day
Work Continues as State Deadlines Rapidly Approach

Boston, MA – September 30, 2024 – This year’s National Voter Registration Day has achieved unprecedented success, shattering partnership records and helping 820,000 American voters register or update their voter registration—approximately 1 out of every 280 eligible voters in the country. It is estimated that about 310,000 of these new or updated registrations came from 18-24-year-olds, many voting for the first time in 2024. This remarkable achievement underscores the growing importance of this civic holiday in strengthening our democracy.

“The success of this year’s National Voter Registration Day, celebrated on September 17th, is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director for National Voter Registration Day. “With 820,000 Americans taking action to register or update their voter information, we’re witnessing a powerful surge in civic engagement that helps to strengthen our democracy.” When including registration verifications, that is people who use the various online tools to confirm their registration is up to date, the number grows to roughly 2 million Americans—or 1 in 120 eligible voters—who either registered, updated, or verified their registration.

This success was made possible by a record-breaking civic coalition of 152 Premier Partners (45 more than ever before) and 5,600 Community Partners (1,000 more than ever before) who participated in the event. In all, 40,000 volunteers and staff members worked tirelessly across the nation—at colleges, high schools, libraries, nonprofits, transit hubs, bagel shops, and more—to help citizens register to vote. Meanwhile, the many digital and media partners helped elevate the holiday and registration opportunities online. The collective impact helped facilitate millions of conversations and interactions about the importance of voting.

Sapp adds, “This incredible success is a testament to the hard work of our partners, volunteers, and the American people’s commitment to the democratic process. As we approach critical elections, it’s clear that citizens are more engaged than ever in shaping the future of their communities and country.”

Beyond the holiday itself, National Voter Registration Day events across the nation help to jump-start voter registration drives that will continue up to the various state registration deadlines. Americans are encouraged to visit Vote.gov to register to vote, update their registration, or just verify the information on file is correct.

PRESS RELEASE – National Voter Registration Day is Proud to Announce Partnership with ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) https://nationalvoterregistrationday.org/press-release-national-voter-registration-day-is-proud-to-announce-partnership-with-all-in-campus-democracy-challenge/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 16:47:11 +0000 https://nationalvoterregistrationday.org/?p=24709 From 2020 to 2022, the number of registered voters in America dropped by over 7 million people. That’s partially because every year, millions of Americans move, change their name, turn 18, or become citizens — life events that require registering or re-registering to vote – without even realizing it.

Beyond the basics of civics, voting impacts everyone from the members of our community to the communities we serve. At Lyft, we believe every eligible American should exercise their fundamental rights and that transportation should never be a barrier to access. We aim to be a force of good in our community and want to empower everyone who's eligible to register to vote. We are doing that by sending important reminders about voter registration right in the Lyft app. [...]

National Voter Registration Day is Proud to Announce Partnership with ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN)

Washington, DC – National Voter Registration Day is proud to count the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) among the 150 major national partners backing this year’s civic holiday. ALL IN is a national nonpartisan initiative of the nonprofit Civic Nation and is dedicated to improving civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation among college students across the country. ALL IN is excited to be joining National Voter Registration Day this year to help mobilize this mission to an extensive network of college and university campuses.

“With more than 40 million Gen Zers preparing to vote in this upcoming election, engaging and educating young voters is crucial for the health of our democracy,” said Jen Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of ALL IN. “We’ve identified several measures that will impact ballot access so that young voter turnout can be the highest it has been.”

Through this collaboration, ALL IN helps mobilize young college students through email outreach, social media campaigns, and on-campus registration events. Given their expansive reach, ALL IN has been able to impact more than 1,060 campuses including community colleges, minority-serving institutions, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

“ALL IN’s commitment to empowering students on over 1,060 campuses nationwide is transforming the landscape of civic engagement for young Americans from coast to coast,” said National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director Chyann Sapp. “By fostering a culture of active participation and civic education for the newest generation of voters, they are building the foundation for a stronger democracy of the future. Their focus on ensuring every student, regardless of background, has the tools and opportunities to register and vote is a shining example of how we can come together to ensure every voice is heard.”

The National Voter Registration Day network continues to grow nationally and locally. In addition to the record 15,048 major national organizations and businesses signed on this year, 4,500 local partners – including nonprofits, libraries, colleges, and others across the nation – will be promoting voter registration in their own communities to help ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the upcoming election. “As we gear up for the 2024 National Voter Registration Day to be held on September 17, we are coordinating with other organizations and preparing robust follow-up actions, including phone banking, text messages, email, and mailers to keep newly registered voters engaged and informed about upcoming elections,” adds Sapp.
