National Voter Registration Day 2025 Brings Americans Together in Celebration of Democracy, Registering 300,000 Voters

With more than 100,000 elections on ballots across the country in 2025, over 3,200 local organizations joined forces to help Americans register to vote or update their registration, showing the power of a nonpartisan civic coalition at a time of deep divisions.

BOSTON, MA – On September 16, communities across the country once again came together for National Voter Registration Day, transforming schools, libraries, food banks, college quads, and city streets into nonpartisan celebrations of democracy. Thousands of partners created opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors take their first step into civic participation.

The result was powerful: An estimated 300,000 new and updated voter registrations, surpassing this year’s goal and demonstrating that even in challenging times, civic participation can be a joyful, unifying act. Of the total registrations, 80,000 were collected directly by partners in the field, a reminder that face-to-face conversations and local leadership remain the beating heart of democracy. Many of the remainder were engaged through online or hybrid efforts.

This year’s coalition included:

  • 118 premier partners, bringing national reach and trusted voices to the effort, including: the League of Women Voters, American Library Association, Poder Latinx, YWCA, NAMI, National Disability Rights Network, EveryLibrary, Employees Vote, Comedy Central, BET, eBay, Lyft, Uber, and others who are actively leading the way in mobilizing trusted local institutions to reach both new voters and those who may need to update their registration;
  • More than 3,200 community partners, including 18,000 volunteers and staff, spanning every region and type of community, from rural towns to major cities, youth-led groups to faith communities, food banks to cultural festivals, proving that democracy can thrive anywhere people gather;
  • And sponsors committed to stepping up for their communities, including the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Google, Microsoft, NBA, Levi Strauss & Company, Civic Alliance, Paramount, CAA, I am a Voter, and Room & Board;

Partner surveys show that the overwhelming majority of partners reported positive and energizing experiences, reflecting both the enthusiasm of their communities and the unifying power of nonpartisan voter registration work. These results build on a long tradition: since its founding in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has helped more than 6.3 million Americans register to vote, with this year’s total continuing the strong growth seen in recent cycles.

“Once again, this year’s results show the power of people coming together to say that there are no off years in creating a democracy that is representative of our communities,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director of National Voter Registration Day. “In a moment when division can feel overwhelming, our partners proved that unity and joy are possible when we commit to strengthening democracy together.”

With more than 100,000 open seats on ballots this year from school boards and city councils to state legislatures and local ballot measures, the registrations collected on September 16 will shape decisions that affect communities every day. Already, partners are using the momentum from this year’s celebration to continue voter registration drives up to their respective state registration deadlines and prepare for get-out-the-vote efforts in the weeks ahead.

Some notable highlights include:

  • Registration totals coming out of California, where a major redistricting measure is on the November ballot, rival the number of registrations collected in 2024.
  • With a significant mayoral race grabbing people’s attention along with other races around the state, New York voter registration numbers almost doubled the registration numbers from last year’s National Voter Registration Day.
  • Registration rates out of Illinois were also very strong  with municipal elections taking place across the state this November.

To hear directly from the voices of partners who brought this effort to life, watch the National Voter Registration Day 2025 Virtual Press Conference featuring Democracy North Carolina registering voters at a homeless shelter, students at Brandeis Univ. outside Boston, leaders from HeadCount organizing youth-led engagements in New York, Poder Latinx across Southern California, Detroit Change Initiative, and more.

National Voter Registration Day will be held next on September 15, 2026. To learn more about the holiday, visit the official holiday website

National Voter Registration Day is held each year in September, on a Tuesday prior to the various state registration deadlines. Deadlines can vary from as much as 30 days ahead of the election, early October for the November 5 election, to Election Day itself for states with Same Day Registration. Voters can visit vote.gov to begin the registration process in their respective states.

Nation Unites for National Voter Registration Day as 100,000 Open Seats for Election Take Shape in 2025

Nearly 3,500 partners from schools, libraries, concerts, and block parties will rally communities nationwide on September 16 to get Americans registered and ready to vote.

Boston, MA: On September 16, 2025, communities nationwide will come together for the country’s largest single-day celebration of democracy: National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). With more than 100,000 elections taking place this year — more than in 2024 — the stakes for ensuring every eligible American is registered and able to participate in shaping their neighborhood are higher than ever.

From schools and libraries to concerts and block parties, nearly 3,500 community partners, powered by the support of premier and foundational partners, will host events to help Americans get registered and ready to vote.

Across the country, this national coalition is digging in, standing shoulder to shoulder with local leaders, and stepping up to meet the moment.

HeadCount is carrying the celebratory spirit into the cultural space, hosting a flagship block party in New York City’s Washington Square Park while also supporting more than 36 youth-led registration drives at campuses and community gathering places nationwide.

“National Voter Registration Day is a celebration of our democracy and a reminder that every election matters, including the ones happening in our own backyards,” said Lucille Wenegieme, Executive Director of HeadCount. “This civic holiday reminds us that participation can be a unifying force. At HeadCount, we see the power of music and culture to bring people together. Today we are channeling that energy into making sure everyone has the chance to use their voice and be part of shaping the future.”

Nonprofit VOTE will coordinate with thousands of nonprofits, libraries, and community organizations nationwide, ensuring local leaders have the tools they need to engage their communities.

“National Voter Registration Day is about the collective power of the community,” said Brian Miller, Executive Director of Nonprofit VOTE. “Year after year, local leaders step up to make sure their neighbors, friends, and families are ready to vote. This year is no different. With thousands of partners nationwide, we are proving once again that there are no off years when it comes to strengthening our democracy.”

When We All Vote is mobilizing its Youth Advisory Fellows and grassroots partners for 30 registration events during the National Voter Registration Week of Action.

“Less than 50 days from Election Day, we cannot ignore how heavy things feel in the world, and we cannot forget the power we have,” said Beth Lynk, Executive Director of When We All Vote. “This National Voter Registration Day, we will bring hope and joy into the fight by celebrating young, Black, and Brown voters using their power at the ballot box. With more elections on the ballot this year than there were in 2024, each election is an opportunity to build a better future for all of us, and that starts with making sure our communities are registered to vote.”

Rock the Vote will activate its national network of young people through digital outreach and local partnerships, making sure the next generation of voters can overcome barriers to the ballot box.

“Registering to vote is the first step in making sure our voices are heard and that we elect leaders who reflect our values,” said Carolyn DeWitt, President and Executive Director of Rock the Vote. “New voters face unique and disproportionate barriers, which means our democracy often fails to represent young people, generation after generation. That is why Rock the Vote is proud to be a founder and partner of National Voter Registration Day, helping young voters get ready to cast their ballots in local elections across the country in 2025.”

Vote.org will continue its mission to remove barriers between voters and the ballot box, building on the more than 2.2 million voters it helped register in 2024.

“Vote.org is proud to be a founding member of National Voter Registration Day,” said Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org. “This civic holiday celebrates democracy as a collaboration. As the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan voter registration platform, we know every voice matters because democracy works best when everyone participates. Your registration today is your power tomorrow.”

National Voter Registration Day will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. To learn more, sign up as a community partner, or find a registration event near you, visit here.

From Libraries to the NBA, Thousands of Partners Unite to Register Voters for National Voter Registration Day

Close to 3,500 organizations join forces to reach millions of voters at a moment when participation matters more than ever

Boston, MA — National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), the country’s largest civic holiday dedicated to getting every eligible American registered to vote, today announced thanks and recognition for the premier partners and sponsors who make the day possible.

For this year’s holiday, on September 16, approximately 3,500 community partners will host nonpartisan voter registration drives and outreach events across the nation. These events will take place in schools, on campuses, at libraries, in houses of worship, on shop floors, and online; all designed to meet voters where they are. The scale of this effort underscores the nonpartisan belief shared across civil society that every eligible American deserves an equal opportunity to have their voice heard in a fully participatory democracy.

Premier partners like the League of Women Voters, American Library Association, Poder Latinx, YWCA, NAMI, National Disability Rights Network, EveryLibrary, Employees Vote, Comedy Central, BET, eBay, Google, Lyft, Uber, and others are leading the way in mobilizing trusted local institutions to reach both new voters and those who may need to update their registration. Sponsors including the NBA, Meta, Levi Strauss & Co, and more are providing the financial support that makes this work possible at a national scale. For the full list of partners and sponsors, please see here.

“At a time when our democracy is being tested and too many Americans are left behind, it is incredible to see such a diverse range of organizations step up,” said Chyann Sapp, Campaign Director of National Voter Registration Day. “These partners are not only reminding us that there are no off years, they are proving that civic participation is something all of us can stand behind.”

“At Poder Latinx, we’re proud to stand with National Voter Registration Day to ensure that every eligible voter—from first-timers to longtime community members—has the tools, guidance, and confidence to participate.  Civic engagement isn’t just a right; it’s a way to strengthen our neighborhoods, amplify our stories, and shape policies that reflect our families’ needs. Every voice in our community deserves to be heard, and every vote matters, and when we show up to vote, it goes beyond casting a ballot: we’re building a future where Latino voices lead, influence, and create lasting change,” said Yadira Sánchez, Executive Director of Poder Latinx.

This year’s efforts come at a pivotal moment. More than 40 million Americans have moved in the past year, and over 4 million have turned 18 or become naturalized citizens. Each of them needs to register or update their registration in order to cast a ballot. By convening thousands of partners from every corner of society, National Voter Registration Day ensures that no community is left out.

National Voter Registration Day will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. To learn more, sign up as a community partner, or find a registration event near you, visit here.

Communities Prepare for National Voter Registration Day as Key States See Expanding Networks of Partners

With almost 3,500 organizations expected to take part, National Voter Registration Day continues to mobilize trusted community institutions in a key year for local elections

Boston, MA: The leadership team at National Voter Registration Day announced they are well on track for another year of strong participation, with almost 3,500 community partners expected to host events on September 16. Organizations from New York to California, and from Michigan to Georgia are preparing to help their neighbors register, update their information, and ensure their voices are heard in the more than 100,000 local elections taking place this year.

New York, Texas, and California are each expected to have more than 250 partners organizing local events, with hundreds more across North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia, and Michigan. The expansion highlights the grassroots momentum behind the holiday, as trusted local institutions like public libraries, food pantries, community colleges, and neighborhood associations take the lead in bringing voter registration directly to the communities they serve.

“Right now, over 40 million Americans either moved or turned 18 in the last year, and others have naturalized or changed their names requiring a voter registration update,” said Brian Miller, Executive Director of Nonprofit VOTE, the managing partner of National Voter Registration Day. “Those are the voters who can decide the school board budgets, the housing policy, the local races that shape our daily lives. We are proud to help those individuals make their voices heard in decisions affecting their own communities.”

“The League of Women Voters is excited to host hundreds of events in communities across the country for National Voter Registration Day,” said Jeanette Senecal, Chief of Civic Learning and Impact at the League of Women Voters. “Voters in more than 35 states still have the chance to shape the future of their communities in meaningful ways this year. The League is proud to partner with NVRD to make sure every eligible voter knows that there is no such thing as an ‘off year’ when it comes to democracy.”

“Libraries are trusted community spaces where people come to learn, connect, and participate,” said Sam Helmick, President of the American Library Association. “That includes providing access to civic information that empowers neighbors to make their voices heard at the ballot box. The American Library Association is committed to working alongside NVRD and our partners to meet this moment and ensure that communities have the resources they need in this election year.”

Across the country, community groups will host registration drives at farmers markets, libraries, food pantries, local colleges, and small businesses. Together, they form a nonpartisan network working to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to register and participate in shaping the future of their communities.

Organizations in every state can still join the effort, gaining access to free resources, training, and visibility as part of the nationwide celebration. To learn more or to sign up, organizations can visit the official holiday website. Organizations that sign up by the end of Tuesday, September 2, will receive complimentary event organizing kits. For inquiries please contact Kelsea-Marie Pym, kelsea@nonprofitvote.org.

Surprise Celebrity Guests Join National Voter Registration Day Rally

Washington, DC, September 12– Yesterday , celebrities Alysia Reiner, Linda Powell, and Zoe Lister-Jones joined efforts to share tips and strategies for making their National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) events a success on September 17. The civic holiday has coordinated a number of events nationwide to educate on voter registration requirements and provide opportunities for voters to register ahead of the upcoming election – and today marks the beginning of an impactful movement to draw attention to next week.

Alysia, Linda, and Zoe thanked guests for lending their time and energy to NVRD’s voter registration efforts to help eligible voters participate in free and fair elections. Linda Powell shared her support for NVRD by noting how grateful she is for the desire to work for our democracy. She stated,“It’s sobering to think about the 600,000 nonvoters who said they didn’t vote in the last election because they weren’t registered. Your work will impact outcomes across the country, and I’m so thankful we could come together today to learn how to help those around us register to vote in order to ensure democracy wins.”

Alysia Reiner thanked attendees for their efforts, saying, “This is what democracy looks like and it is so beautiful to me. Thank you for giving your time and your energy to protecting our democracy.” Zoe Lister-Jones added, “We are at such a critical juncture in our country’s history and our country’s future. Everyone here today can make such a massive impact on free and fair elections – and getting people, who have the will to vote and make their voices heard, to the polls.”

The National Voter Registration Day effort, spearheaded by Nonprofit VOTE, aims to mobilize voters nationwide. Thanks to their continued support, the civic holiday has worked to register over 5 million eligible voters since its kickoff in 2012 in time for their next trip to the ballot box because of National Voter Registration Day and the associated events.

“Thanks to a recent Harvard study, we know that celebrity voices are incredibly powerful in promoting civic engagement,” says National Voter Registration Day Campaign Director Chyann Sapp. “We’re thankful for the support of artists like Alysia Reiner, Linda Powell, and Zoe Lister-Jones for throwing their voices behind such an important cause and showing up to inspire the local partners who drive the bulk of this work.”

During presidential elections, voter registration and turnout are at their highest. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Nonprofit VOTE has assembled a record number of local and national partners – over 5,000 community partners and 150 national partners – to ensure that every eligible voter can participate on election day.

To learn more about other National Voter Registration Day efforts across the country, go to nationalvoterregistrationday.org/. Nonprofit VOTE is the managing partner and fiscal sponsor of the National Voter Registration Day event, which itself is a collaborative event made possible by its many partners organizing to engage their respective communities.

When you think of Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.), their iconic denim jeans probably come to mind. But this American retailer is about more than just fashion—they’re on a mission to stitch democracy into the very fabric of their business practices. Let’s take a closer look at how one of our long-time corporate partners is gearing up for voter engagement efforts across the country on National Voter Registration Day 2024.

LS&Co.’s commitment to democracy is deeply woven into their 170 year history. As Alexis Bechtol, Director of Community Affairs and NVRD Steering Committee member, proudly shared, “This tradition goes all the way back to our founder, Levi Strauss, who set a lasting example for us in 1864 when he closed stores on Election Day to ensure every employee had a chance to vote.” LS&Co. is still championing civic engagement all these years later. Since joining the NVRD Steering Committee in 2018, they’ve worked tirelessly alongside our Partners to “reduce obstacles to civic participation and advance voting rights through holistic programming, inclusive of grantmaking, employee engagement, our Levi’s brand and advocacy.”

Their NVRD track record over the years shows LS&C. has stayed true to their roots. In 2018, they launched Time to Vote, in partnership with Patagonia and PayPal. The Levi’s® brand created limited-edition “VOTE” T-shirts that had celebrities, nonprofit partners, and influencers looking civic-chic. In 2020, they introduced the “Three for (Nov.) 3” campaign, encouraging employees to volunteer at polls, register voters in their communities, and support Vote Grantee organizations dedicated to voting rights and engagement. The Levi’s® brand also launched the #VoteAboutIt campaign, aiming to move their customers to translate thought into action at the polls. In 2022, they supported students on 150 community college campuses and held registration events with Pizza to the Polls. Because nothing says “democracy” quite like pizza and civic duty!

This year, LS&Co. is taking their voter engagement game to the next level with the Community College Commitment. This nonpartisan coalition—consisting of corporate partners including Lyft and SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios, as well as nonprofits including Students Learn Students Vote Coalition and the American Association of Community Colleges—is working to close the community college voting gap, aiming to turn out 500,000 community college voters by 2028. As part of this initiative, they’ve supported 30 community colleges across the country in their efforts to promote National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) and enhance civic engagement among students. They’re also co-hosting the Community College Concert Competition where the colleges  can enter to win a live concert on Vote Early Day (October 29, 2024) by showcasing their plan to engage student voters throughout the academic year.

The initiative is off to a great start. As Bechtol reports, “Ninety-three community colleges submitted a nonpartisan democratic engagement action plan before June, nearly three times as many as had done so by this time in 2020.”

LS&Co. isn’t shy about why they’re so invested in voter engagement. As Bechtol puts it, “A strong democracy is good for business, and democracy only works when everyone can vote.” Just as importantly, the business community has a critical, nonpartisan role to play in increasing access to the polls; “Our mission as a company is to deliver profits through principles to have an outsized impact on the world,” Bechtol explains. “[NVRD] is part of that, and this is a way that we can contribute not to any specific candidate or issue, as all of our efforts are nonpartisan, but to the participation in and strength of our democracy.”

Their commitment extends beyond registration drives to the kinds of contributions that only employers can make: voting “on company time.” LS&Co. has been at the forefront of efforts to ensure working Americans have the time they need to cast their ballots on Election Day. Through Time to Vote, a partnership that has helped nearly 2,000 companies ensure millions of hourly workers don’t have to choose between voting and a paycheck. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most fashionable thing you can wear to work is your “I Voted” sticker.

From the way Bechtol tells it, the sort of civic engagement work that LS&Co. does is a labor that everyone can be proud of. As she shares, “Our efforts are a source of tremendous pride and engagement for our employees, many of whom have signed up to be poll workers, register voters at concerts and festivals, and rally those around them to use their voice.” The work is also an important piece of LS&Co.’s own brand identity: “Ultimately, it feeds directly into our desire as a company not only to last another 170 years, but to be worthy of doing so because we contribute to positive social change and help our people thrive in their lives and work.”

As National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) approaches, Snap Inc. is reaffirming its commitment to fostering civic engagement among young voters. The company behind Snapchat, a platform that reaches millions of young Americans daily, sees NVRD as a crucial opportunity to make civic participation an integral part of the Snapchat generation’s coming-of-age experience.

Snap is a long-time corporate partner of National Voter Registration Day and has served on the Steering Committee since 2018, consistently demonstrating their ability to empower new voters and that all of us, including corporations, have a role to play in celebrating and strengthening our democracy.

For Snap, NVRD is a chance to leverage their native-to-mobile platform to seamlessly integrate voter registration into the daily lives of their users. By making the process accessible and user-friendly, Snap aims to remove barriers and encourage widespread participation in the democratic process.

This year, Snap is taking their commitment to the next level by launching innovative in-app civic tools. These features will allow Snapchatters to check their registration status, register to vote, sign up for election reminders, and even make a plan to vote for Election Day—all without leaving the app they likely use every day. It’s a powerful example of how technology can be harnessed to strengthen democracy.

Snap’s approach to civic engagement is rooted in their understanding of their user base. They recognize that for many young people, Snapchat is more than just a social media platform – it’s an important means of self-expression. By integrating voter registration and engagement tools into the app, Snap is sending a clear message: your unique voice matters, and civic participation is a fundamental way to make yourself heard in our democracy.

Leading up to September 17, Snap is pulling out all the stops. They’re leveraging organic growth activations, marketing initiatives, and partnerships with Snap Stars and publishers to push their registration tools. Snap’s efforts extend beyond just registration to voter education, too. They’re also refreshing their “Voting 101” page, providing comprehensive voting information to ensure users are well-informed. They’re also encouraging their content creators to spread the word about voting, creating a ripple effect of civic awareness throughout their network.

By coupling voter education with their engagement efforts, Snap aims to help voters get the information they need to follow through on the civic process that begins with voter registration. They also monitor their impact by looking at viewers, registrations, absentee ballot requests, and engagement with ballot information. This holistic approach ensures they’re keeping their goal of real engagement with the voting process, not just surface-level interactions, at the forefront of their NVRD efforts.

As we approach National Voter Registration Day, Snap’s efforts serve as a powerful reminder of the role tech companies can play in strengthening our democracy. By meeting young voters where they are—on their phones and in their favorite apps—Snap is helping to create a new generation of engaged citizens.

This National Voter Registration Day, when Snapchatters open their app, they’ll find more than just filters and friend updates—they’ll find the tools and information they need to make their voices heard in our democracy.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) is gearing up to make a big splash on college campuses across the United States this National Voter Registration Day. This nonpartisan initiative is dedicated to improving civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation among college students. ALL IN’s influence is far-reaching, with more than 1,030 campuses participating across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. This network serves over 9.9 million students, including 232 community colleges, 256 minority-serving institutions, 158 Hispanic-serving institutions, and 47 Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

Young people represent a critical voting bloc in American politics, with more than 40 million Gen Zers preparing to vote in 2024. However, as Jen Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of ALL IN, points out, college students face unique challenges when it comes to voting. Many have turned 18 recently and may be voting for the first time. Additionally, students often move for college, which can complicate their voter registration status.

ALL IN has identified several measures that significantly impact ballot access for young voters. States offering same-day voter registration see notably higher turnout among young voters. States that automatically register young people when they interact with government agencies see a 3.5 point increase in youth turnout. Pre-registration, which allows 17-year-olds to register to vote if they will be 18 at the time of the next election, has registered more than 2.1 million teenagers across the country since 2016. In the 2020 election, states with wider access to vote-by-mail saw an average youth turnout rate of 57%, compared to only 42% in states with more limited vote by mail policies.

ALL IN empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement through a structured program that provides students with support and recognition. Their approach includes convening campus-wide voting coalitions, developing data-informed action plans to increase student voting rates, and participating in the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) to track student voter registration and turnout. “Campuses that join ALL IN develop and implement a data-informed action plan to increase student voting rates, which we’ve seen successfully increase voter registration rates on campus,” Domagal-Goldman explains.

For National Voter Registration Day 2024, ALL IN is mobilizing its extensive network of campuses. Their efforts include email outreach, social media campaigns, and on-campus registration events. But their work doesn’t stop there: ALL IN is committed to “making democratic engagement programs a defining feature of campus life and culture—this NVRD and beyond.” By focusing on recruiting and supporting community colleges and Minority Serving Institutions, ALL IN is also working to close student voter participation gaps based on demographics such as age and race. They also recognize that it’s important to lift up our wins in this line of work, which is why they celebrate the achievements of their university and college partners during their biennial awards ceremony.

At the end of the day, for ALL IN, NVRD poses the perfect opportunity to nurture an active, informed citizenry by “educating students, motivating them to engage in American democracy, and instilling the value of lifelong participation.” Based on ALL IN’s track record and plans for the holiday, we have no doubt they’ll continue to make major contributions to efforts bringing young Americans into the fold of our democracy, getting them fired up to make their voices heard in this, and every, election.

As National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) approaches, we’re featuring Dominicanos USA (DUSA) for its powerful, dedicated efforts in empowering Dominican-Americans and other Latino communities through voter registration and civic engagement initiatives.

Founded in 2013 and based in Manhattan, New York, DUSA is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization with a clear mission “to empower the Dominican-American community and give them a voice through civic, social, and economic engagement.” Part of this mission is fulfilled through voter registration and mobilization campaigns, citizenship application assistance, and more recently, technology and esports initiatives.

DUSA’s impact is evident in their impressive numbers. Since their founding, they’ve achieved 185,000 voter registrations in the northeast, and over 116,229 in NY alone. These unparalleled outreach metrics have been achieved through effective peer-to-peer communication, social media, and data analytics.

The organization has been a dedicated participant in National Voter Registration Day since 2016. Their approach combines on-the-ground efforts with digital strategies. For instance, during NVRD 2022, DUSA launched a digital campaign that reached over 3,100 individuals through email, social media, and Google ads. They also partnered with the Castle Hill YMCA in the Bronx, setting up a table to register members to vote and provide crucial information about voting.

DUSA’s strategies for mobilizing their community are diverse and targeted. They collaborate with other organizations, run social media campaigns, recruit and train volunteers, distribute informational materials at events like the annual Dominican Parade, and encourage community members to spread the word about the importance of voter registration.

One of their most exciting initiatives is the Youth Ambassadors program, launched in 2022. This program is driven by the power of relational organizing, training youth organizers to reach out to their network of family and friends during voter registration and mobilization campaigns. As Eddie Cuesta explains, “Youth ambassador training empowers these young people to become leaders in the community and to learn important lessons about how voting impacts elections and policy decisions.”

The program has seen significant success, with over 90 high school students from various New York City schools completing it. These students come from schools such as the International School of Liberal Arts (ISLA) on the Walton Campus, English Language Learners and International Support Preparatory Academy (ELLIS), Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, and others.

Despite their many successes, DUSA is acutely aware of the challenges in engaging voters. They cite apathy as a significant issue, with the group’s leadership stating that some community members simply believe “that their vote doesn’t count or make a difference.” Misinformation is another hurdle, particularly, they say, around “understanding the importance of enrolling in a political party so they can vote in the primaries.”

To address these challenges, DUSA focuses on educational campaigns and creates user-friendly materials that aim to overcome any language barriers by being concise and easy to understand in English as well as Spanish. Their approach is rooted in their deep connection to the Dominican community; as Cuesta puts it, “Our shared ethnic background, culture, and language allow us to relate authentically to our community, though we recognize and respect its diversity.”

DUSA is embracing digital tools to reach their communities about voter registration. Their Youth Ambassadors host a podcast called “Civics Chat: Empowering Youth in Democracy,” available on YouTube and Spotify. The ambassadors also create individual content on voter registration, issues important to youth, and why voting matters, which is posted on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

As you can probably guess from all of these grassroots initiatives, volunteers are crucial to DUSA’s efforts. They help manage registration points, promote events, provide information about the voting process, and assist individuals with registration. As Cuesta explains, “their participation will be essential to expand our reach and ensure that we connect with as many people as possible.”

Cuesta shared a touching success story about a woman named Yrayda D., whom they assisted in becoming a U.S. citizen. After helping Yrayda complete her N-400 application in March 2023, DUSA staff were delighted to see her at a USCIS swearing-in ceremony in November 2023, where she eagerly registered to vote. As Cuesta recounts, “Yrayda expressed deep gratitude for the assistance DUSA provided in helping her become a citizen and also registering her to vote so she can take full advantage of all the U.S. has to offer.”

Looking ahead to this year’s National Voter Registration Day, DUSA is coordinating with other organizations to ensure consistent messaging and planning impactful events. They’re also preparing robust follow-up actions, including “phone banking, text messages, email, and mailers” to keep newly registered voters engaged and informed about upcoming elections.

As we approach National Voter Registration Day, organizations like Dominicanos USA remind us of the power of community engagement and the importance of ensuring every eligible citizen has the opportunity to participate in our democracy. Through their tireless efforts and innovative approaches, they’re not just registering voters—they’re building a more inclusive and representative future for all Americans.
